Gary Hunt, Vice Chair, California Strategies Gary Hunt provides the clients of California Strategies over 30 years of experience in business, government, public policy and major land use planning, entitlement and development. A founding partner of California Strategies, Hunt's experiences extend through the largest master-planned community developers and landowners in the Western United States, including Strategic Hotels and Resorts REIT, Inland American Trust REIT, Five Point Communities, Tejon Ranch, DMB, Kennecott Land Company, LandSource, Lennar, Lewis Group of Companies, and Newhall Land, to name a few. He successfully secures Coastal Commission approvals and funding for major coastal programs, and leads negotiations with some of the nation's largest environmental groups, which previously resulted in the transfer of hundreds of thousands of acres of open space in return for entitlement opportunities. Hunt also works with major national financial institutions, including Morgan Stanley, Alvarez & Marsal Capital Group, LLC, and regional banks, to manage projects through the current macro-economic restructuring period. Hunt spent over 25 years with The Irvine Company, one of the nation's largest master planning and land development organizations, and 10 years as its Executive Vice President, serving on its Board of Directors and Executive Committee. Hunt led the company's major entitlement, regional infrastructure, planning, legal and strategic government relations, as well as, media and community relations activities. He is well versed in working with the California government at the local, regional, state and federal levels. Hunt developed close relationships with California's business leaders through his service on the Boards of Directors of the California Business Roundtable, State Chamber of Commerce and other statewide and national business organizations. He formerly served as Founding Chairman of the Kennecott Land Company in Salt Lake City, Utah. Previously a member and Lead Independent Director of the Grubb & Ellis Company's Board of Directors, Hunt stepped in to serve as interim President and Chief Executive Officer for 16 months. During his term, working with Executive Management and the Board, Hunt restructured and positioned the firm for the future. He currently serves on the boards of William Lyon Homes, C.T. Realty, and Glenair Corp. Hunt's political experience spans over four decades. His career began as a consultant to the California State Legislature and on the staff of then-Gov. Ronald Reagan. He volunteered as California State Finance Vice Chairman for Governor Pete Wilson in 1990 and 1994, Finance Chairman in 1998 for the Republican Nominee for Governor, State Finance Chairman for Governor Schwarzenegger, and Campaign Chairman for Carly Fiorina for California State Senator.  Drawing on his experience serving on prominent state boards and commissions, Hunt brings to California Strategies and its clients insights into the workings of California government. He was appointed by Governor Pete Wilson to the California Constitutional Revision Commission and the Little Hoover Commission. Assembly Speakers Villaraigosa and Hertzberg appointed him to the Speaker's Commissions on Fiscal Reform, Initiatives Reform, and Governmental Reform.  Governor Gray Davis appointed him to the State Infrastructure Commission and to the California/Federal Bay Delta Advisory Board, where he served as Chairman. He also served as Chairman of the California Bay Delta Authority. Hunt attended Antelope Valley Community College, University of Cincinnati, and Long Beach and Sacramento State College, where he majored in Political Science. He holds a Juris Doctorate from Irvine University School of Law.
