Science is the foundation of all our efforts  Developing and applying the best available science is at the core of our stewardship and enhancement work.  Only through research, monitoring, and adapting our conservation management based on new findings will we fully understand Tejon Ranch’s natural resources and how best to protect, enhance, and restore them. Science activities that the Conservancy is engaged in: Collecting observations and quantitative data to develop a baseline understanding of the Ranch’s natural resources. Deliberately designing management practices with monitoring to increase our knowledge about these ecosystems, how they respond to management, and any new stewardship practices that may enhance their condition. Partnering with academia, non-governmental organizations, government agencies and the general public. Openly sharing our results and assessments with land managers in the region and beyond. The Conservancy’s current blueprint for conservation management at Tejon Ranch is summarized in our Ranch-wide Management Plan which will be updated at least every 5 years to incorporate new information developed by the Science Program.

Citizen Science

The Tejon Ranch Conservancy is continuing to explore and document the rich natural resources of the Ranch and volunteer citizen science is a key element of this effort. The ecology and natural history of Tejon Ranch have been largely unknown. Only by engaging the knowledge and passion of volunteers in collaboration with our science team have we been able to expand the depth and breadth of our understanding of the Ranch’s ecology.  Our reliance on citizen scientists will only deepen as we further this exploration.  For our volunteers, these projects provide an unparalleled opportunity to explore the Ranch. You or your group can get involved by contacting us here at the Tejon Ranch Conservancy. More

The Conservancy has developed strong research partnerships with academia and professional consultants to address specific information needs or research questions related to the Conservancy’s stewardship activities.  We also facilitate access to Tejon Ranch for research activities not directly related to our stewardship mission.  All of our research is undertaken openly and collaboratively, and we freely make available our results.  Our goal is to disseminate our findings widely to fellow conservationists, scientists and those managing working landscapes.  We welcome proposals for research projects, which can be sent to Mike White at the Tejon Ranch Conservancy.
